5 Foods to Avoid During Piles

foods to avoid during piles

In conditions of Haemorrhoids, among the reasons that worsens it, constipation stands out because this is one factor that is in our control if the food we take is proper. Top 5 foods that can be avoided to prevent worsening of haemorrhoids are:-

Refined foods – These foods have had the bran and germ removed, making it less fibrous and have been stripped of their original nutrient content. Refined white flour, white pasta, and white sugar are just some examples. Refined flour products like white bread, cakes, pastries, buns and puffs which are easily available from a bakery are known to cause constipation and worsen haemorrhoids. Most of the western foods that are junk, such as burgers, pizzas and pastas are made from refined grains that increase the chances of constipation. Complete absence of fibre in refined grain products can lead to hard and dry stools that make defaecating more difficult for people with Haemorrhoids.

Processed foods – Foods that have been cooked, canned, frozen, packaged or changed in nutritional composition by fortifying, preserving or preparing in different ways are said to be processed. Under this category are included canned food, lunch meals and ready to eat packed foods. These foods such as sausages and other cold cuts are low in fibre and high in sodium, increasing the risk of constipation. Sodium is added to foods for flavour and as part of some food preservatives and additives. On the other hand, processed foods such as bottled juices, syrups and jams are high in sugar content which are equally harmful for digestion and easy bowel movement.

Salty foods – Foods like cheese, chips, pickles and preserved meals are high in salt. They are known to cause bloated feeling and disturb eating patterns that can increase chances of constipation, making haemorrhoids more sensitive. Salt makes the body hold on to water and dehydrate the food eaten, which puts more pressure on the blood vessels. That includes the veins of the anal region that cause haemorrhoids.

Meat - Red meat specifically is more difficult to digest. If there is a constant fear of constipation, it is better to switch to a vegetarian diet. Vegetarian protein substitutes such as pulses and lentils are healthier with additional fibre in them. Excess meat in every day meals can make the diet devoid of essential fibre to keep the bowels moving.

Oily/spicy foods - French fries and other deep-fried foods should totally be avoided. High fat food put pressure on the digestive process and can be hard on the digestive tract and difficult to digest. Reduced consumption of fat, especially saturated fat, limited consumption of dairy fat such as butter and cream can improve Haemorrhoid symptoms. Red peppers like spices increase pain and irritation and cause problems in the stomach. Victims of haemorrhoids should avoid these meals. Spicy foods with chilies can cause discomfort in stomach and can increase the problem of indigestion even more. The added spices increase acidity and lead to swelling of the anal veins. Chilies and peppers added in excess amounts to food may increase pain and discomfort associated with haemorrhoids.
