Overcoming Constipation Challenges When Living with Piles

How Are Constipation and Piles Connected?

Constipation is a condition that occurs when you have infrequent bowel movements or difficulty passing stool for several weeks or more. If constipation continues for a long time, then you are at risk for certain complications. One of these complications is haemorrhoids which are also known as piles.

Both constipation and piles can be caused by each other. Haemorrhoids cause discomfort and make it more difficult to pass stool. Piles can also obstruct the stool passageway and thus, further worsen constipation.

Constipation may make you strain yourself to pass stool. Straining during bowel movements can make the veins in and around your anus and rectum swell turning them into piles. The piles in turn aggravate the constipation creating a vicious cycle.

How to Overcome Constipation While Living with Piles:

Treatment for hemorrhoid-related constipation differs slightly from the treatment for other causes of constipation.

  • Add adequate fibre to your diet:

Eating more fibre can help soften the stool which makes it easier to pass. Individuals can get fibre from fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

  • Drink plenty of water:

Staying hydrated softens stools and thus, helps avoid constipation. If you do not drink enough water, your body might extract water from the colon. This can lead to dry and hard stool that is harder to pass.

  • Exercise regularly:

Physical activity stimulates bowel movements and can help prevent constipation.

  • Take a sitz bath:

A sitz bath is a bath in which one soaks themselves in a warm, shallow tub to help reduce pain and inflammation in the anal area. A daily soak for 10 to 15 minutes is recommended.

  • Use topical treatments:

Creams and ointments can relieve haemorrhoid symptoms and reduce pain and itching.
