Tips to reduce recovery time after Piles surgery

Piles after care tips

Haemorrhoidectomy, a surgery performed to remove piles. Treatment and surgery of piles or Removal of piles can reduce the pain and bleeding caused by piles and also prevents the recurrence of piles. After the piles surgery is done, aftercare also plays a very important role in managing pain and the time it takes for complete recovery.

Piles surgery is most often an outpatient procedure

On the day of surgery, you will be put under local or general anesthesia, whichever your doctor feels is appropriate. Once the surgery is done, most often you will be allowed to go home after the anesthesia wears off completely and your vitals are normal.

You will find stitches in the places where the piles are removed and you will be put under medicines including pain medicine (pain killers).   In some cases, you may have to stay back for a day at the hospital if your doctor thinks it necessary.

How you control your pain after piles surgery?

Make sure you follow your doctor's prescription and take medicines and pain management medicines regularly. The anal area will be tender and very sensitive after the surgery. You will need maximum rest and little movement is advised during the first few weeks.

In order to manage pain, a sitz bath may be advised with warm water. Sitz bath is a small bowl that is kept on the western toilet, filled with warm water and you can sit over it to smooth your bottom from pain. When you need to sit on a chair or on the bed, you can use a donut-shaped pillow so that you don’t put pressure around your anus region.

Keep your bottom clean at all times

Keeping your bottom clean at all times is important. This statement holds good when you are generally healthy and more important after piles surgery. If you live in the western world where you wipe your bottom after passing stools, it is recommended that you take a shower to clean off the area or use a sitz bath to clean your bottom.

It is important to use soft and moist towels to wipe off the area instead of using dry toilet paper. Make sure that you don’t wipe the area too much, use a sitz bath instead.  A little amount of blood and mucous discharge can be expected during the initial days after the surgery. If that continues after a week, you must notify your doctor about the same. If you see that your stool is leaking, you can wear a diaper.

What you can and should not do after piles surgery?

The sooner you start walking, the better it is. Your doctor will let you know what you can do and cannot do after the surgery. Avoid lifting heavy objects until recovery. Don’t strain yourself to pass stools. If you have a constipation problem or if you are having difficulty passing stools, let your doctor know and he/she will put you on stool softeners. Add more fiber to your food that can help you pass stools easily.

Though it takes about a month to heal completely, you can return to work from the third week after piles surgery.

Be in touch with your surgeon after the surgery.  You may need to go for a check during the third or fourth week after the surgery to make sure that you are healing well. A little bit of post-operative care will help you a lot while recovering from piles surgery.
